Process
The WebQuest is designed for use in a technology rich classroom or lab setting. However, modifications could be made. If computers are not easily accessible, students could complete research using tradebooks, textbooks, almanacs and encyclopedias. In addition, if Inspiration software is not available, students could generate their own web or complete a KWL chart.
The WebQuest allows for great flexibility. The research should take up to two class periods to complete, with the artifacts completed in up to five class periods. Depending on the students' interest, this webquest could take an additional two to three days.
You may wish to divide your students into partners; however, students may complete the WebQuest individually. If you choose to have students complete the time capsule individually, it is recommended that you provide opportunities for students to work cooperatively during the research portion of the WebQuest. Students should share computer time equally.
Once students have chosen one of the regions listed below, they will need to complete their research.
The artifacts that must be included in the time capsule are listed below. In addition, students are provided a project checklist to assist them as they complete each artifcat.
Variations
A variation of this activity might include completing the WebQuest for a region of the United States. In addition, the students could also create time capsules for countries of the world.
